Tanzania's Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has allayed fears that there are fake Star Times decoders in the country, The Citizen reported. The TCRA statement comes after the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) directed Star Times immediately to withdraw DVB-T1 set-top boxes from the market on the grounds that they have been suspended. Star Times does business in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda among other countries in Eastern Africa but in a quick rejoinder, TCRA said that such cases have not been reported in Tanzania. TCRA director general John Nkoma told The Citizen that the set-top boxes that the regulator approved for Star Times do not have any problem. He said it was TCRA's duty to make sure that it approves products that meet the standards and requirements. Nkoma did warn that people should avoid informal means of purchasing decoders if they want to get genuine products.
